Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre

The Inception

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, was established in 1996. It was Dr P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune’s vision and desire to set up one of the best College, Hospital and Research Centre in Maharashtra and across the country. His efforts bore fruit and with the blessings of Hon’ble Dr. D. Y. Patil, Ex-Governor, Bihar and Tripura the Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre was started.

Dr D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre is a constituent unit of Dr D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, which is a NAAC re-accredited (3rd Cycle) Vidyapeeth with a 3.64 CGPA on four point scale at ‘A++’ Grade and ISO 9001: 2015 certified ‘Deemed to be University.’

Dr D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, has been accorded the status of University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No. F. 9-39/2001-U.3 dated 11th January 2003 by the Government of India.



The Initial Phase

Initially, the Institute commenced with 100 seats for the MBBS course which was the annual intake. The main goal of the Institute besides imparting education is to educate and train in such a way so that there is all-round development of the student. In the long run, these will not only help students achieve all-round success in their careers but also assist them to identify and prioritize health needs to serve humanity.

It is the first private College in the State of Maharashtra to receive approval from the Medical Council of India (M.C.I.) and the Government of India. Moreover, within a short span of time, the intake capacity of students for the MBBS Course increased from 100 to 150 students in 2003 and from 150 to 250 in 2012. Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune has received recognition from the Medical Council of India (M.C.I.), for awarding MBBS Degrees from its very first batch initially to 100, later to 150 and 250 MBBS students. This is the first Medical College in Maharashtra and the third private Medical College in India recognized by MCI for 250 seats.

Courses on Offer

Students can also pursue their Postgraduate Degree and Superspeciality Courses from this College. They can undertake it in 20 different subjects like, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT (Oto Rhino Laryngology), General Medicine, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Psychiatry, Radio-diagnosis, Respiratory Medicine, Skin & Venereal Diseases, Pathology, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Emergency Medicine. The annual intake for these courses is 220.

In the 12 Superspeciality Courses, M. Ch. Neurosurgery, M. Ch. Urology, D.M. Nephrology, M. Ch. Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, D. M. Cardiology, D. M. Neurology, M. Ch. (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), D. M. (Interventional Radiology), D. M. (Critical Care Medicine), D. M. (Medical Gastroenterology), M. Ch. (Surgical Oncology) and M. Ch. (Pediatrics Surgery) the annual intake is 30. Besides these, there are PhD programs in all subjects and fellowship programs in a few clinical specialties.

Infrastructure & Facilities

The College building is an architectural masterpiece in itself! It has a mural of Lord Dhanvantari on its facade and a magnificent fibreglass dome, which can be seen from miles around. The Institute is also known for its state-of-the-art facilities that are in tune with the best in the world.

The efforts put in by the faculty, availability of world-class facilities, and infrastructure like spacious A/c lecture theatres, well-equipped museums, practical laboratories, and a well-stocked library have set this Institute apart from others.

Besides regular lectures and practical’s, the College gives importance to research. Several research proposals of faculty members and students have been approved and have been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), DST and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune.

The College has more than 2011 bedded well-equipped hospital that is backed by the Research Centre. It has 175 Intensive Care beds, 26 futuristic Operating Theatres by Maquet and Dragger with advanced technology, 80 specialized outpatient consultation suites, 4th generation Da Vinci xi Robot for Robotic Surgery, Twin Cath Lab, 2 CT Scan machines (128 slice and 16 slices), 3 MRI machines (0.2, 1.5Tesla and 3 Tesla), Digital X-rays, Digital mammography, Ultrasonography, Colour Doppler, PACS, DSA system, DR System, sophisticated laboratories, multi-organ transplant unit, liver intensive care unit, sophisticated instruments for therapeutics management, etc. Dr D. Y. Patil Hospital provides primary, secondary and tertiary care as well as special care for critically ill patients.

The Hospital has performed 146 renal transplants, 45 Liver Transplants, 1 Heart Transplant, 2 Heart and Lung Transplants and 50 Corneal Transplants to date. The facilities for angiography, angioplasty, cardiovascular surgery, etc. are available in the Department of Cardiology and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.

The Hospital is fully geared so that it can provide medical care 24x7. It is equipped with a blood bank with a component facility, Casualty Medical Services, and ambulance services which are operational 24 hours. Also available are monitoring and diagnostic facilities, an Eye bank with eyeball retrieval service, Yashoda Human Milk Bank, and Renal and Corneal transplant facilities. Since 2012, ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jeevandai Arogya Yojana,’ the health insurance scheme for poor and needy people has been implemented by the College along with the Government of Maharashtra.

Recognition and Rankings

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune at 17th position all over India and the 1st position (only the Medical College) in Maharashtra by MHRD in 2022.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune received the ‘Golden Aim Award’ in three categories viz. Quality healthcare services, Quality healthcare institute and Best healthcare infrastructure in 2022.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune ranked 8th in Western Region and 3rd in Pune Region in the “Health Times all India Multispeciality Hospital Ranking Survey 2021”.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune was conferred a National Award in Green Hospital Category by the Association of HealthCare Providers, New Delhi in February 2020.

In an independent survey conducted by ‘Pioneer’, ‘North East SUN Medical College ranking, Dr D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune and Dr D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune has been adjudged the best Medical Institute of India among top 10 Medical Institutes of India. As per the survey conducted by ‘India Today’, we are the 2nd amongst the private Universities in India.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre has received a Certificate of Excellence being recognized as the “25th Must-Watch Medical College in India” by Higher Education Digest in November 2020.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune received an award of “The most promising Medical College in India” at the 9th Asian Education Summit and Awards 2019 held on 6th April 2019 in New Delhi.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune has won a coveted position in the Guinness Book of World Records by screening the most number of individuals in one hour for hypertension on the eve of World Heart Day 2018.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune stood First among 653 private hospitals in the Country in “Swaccha Bharat Initiative - Kayakalp” by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in October 2019. The College scored 100/100 in the large-scale hospital category.

 The Institute is publishing a Peer-reviewed journal namely Medical Journal of Dr D. Y. Patil University [MJDRDYPU] with Print ISSN: 0975-2870; E-ISSN 2278-7118 which is indexed with, or included in DOAJ, Index Copernicus, Indian Science Abstracts. Recently this Journal has been included in the list of UGC-approved journals for giving academic credits to faculty. Out of about 5000 journals evaluated by the UGC for quality, UGC selected about 800 journals for inclusion in the list of approved quality journals.

It was possible to gain this national status because of the Institute’s trained medical faculty, brand reputation in the medical profession and world-class infrastructure and for achieving academic excellence.

Various Collaborations

The College has collaborated with National and International organizations like WHO for clinical multicenter trials, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard USA, Thammasat University, Surendra Rajabhat University, Surin, Thailand, CARE India, Mission Uday Kishore for Adolescent care etc.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune has established the DPU Unit of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. The aim is to build an education system with the highest pedagogic and ethical standards that will encourage students to be productive and socially responsible citizens within a collaborative learning community. The DPU Unit of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics has been very actively involved in promoting and supporting the Curriculum not only for the Institute but also for other Institutes of the country.

Working for Social Causes

The college also engages in relief work! It has contributed and worked for the victims affected by the floods in Kashmir, landslides at Malin Village and earthquakes in Killari.

Dr D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre stood FIRST in the “Charity Hospital at poor patient’s Doorstep “program in the State of Maharashtra. The main aim of the Program was to provide free treatment to poor and needy patients. It was implemented by the Charity Commissioner, Maharashtra.
